    • Mount Cook

    Who this is for
This is aimed at NZDA members of all skill level - we try and team new hunters (and those still waiting on their licence) with experienced members and is a great opportunity to meet other members of the club.

The basic plan is to meet at Ferintosh Station (was supposed to be Unwin lodge but they are full) which on the way to Mt Cook on the Friday night, hunt on Saturday and leave Sunday am.

Once we have confirmed numbers, we can send the member list out and car pool options will be available

There will be a cost for the 2 nights accommodation. The club will pay for the hire of long range radios for safety.

    Station Lodge accommodation

Mount Cook Road (State Highway 80) , Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, 3km before Aoraki Mt Cook Village

Full directions and details will come out once in a few weeks

    Friday night

    Arrive Friday evening

8:30 pm-ish Short 30 minute briefing on tahr hunting and equipment required and conditions expected to be encountered
9:00 Safety Briefing,  Depending on the forecast, the weather will play a big factor in this.
9:40 Hunting groups and areas to be allocated
9:45 Chill and plan with your allocated hunting group.

As early a start as you like, the smart ones will be out the door fast. Tahr are active early and again just before sunset so take enough food and warm clothing to nap for a few hours on the hill before late afternoon/ early evening hunting. Bring head torches as it is likely you will be returning in the dark

    Return to Lodge Saturday evening

Those super keen can head out again otherwise late breakfast, enjoy Mt Cook or go fishing in the canals and then return home

    What to bring

    • Sleeping bag & pillow (luxury car camping!)
    • Earplugs
    • Food
    • Beer - there is an opportunity to have a few on the Saturday night when you get back
    • Cash for the accommodation if you have not paid and are joining last minute 2 x $35pn = $75  (Note - no eftpos facilites)
    • Rifle and ammo (if you need to borrow a rifle  - let us know)
    • Binos and range finder if you have them (bring spares for the newbies coming if you have some)
    • Hunting clothes - A more detailed list will come out nearer the time
    • Emergency gear (first aid, emergency beacon if you have one)
    • Toiletries and towel (there are showers)

We will bring radios and PLBs but if you have your own that is great

     Getting there

We normally try and car pool - this list will go out nearer the time

NB There is VERY limited cover at the lodge so you may be out of coverage most of the weekend however if family need to contact you in a hurry the lodge will be able to pass a message on .

You will need to be a fully paid up NZDA member to attend this weekend. It is likely we will share some spaces with the Alexandra club .
Should Covid Levels change and the trip is cancelled, we will refund any money paid .

Please note the trip will still go ahead if rain is forecast as often the weather clears enough to get out and hunt at some point.  Delicate soft types not wanting to get wet will not be refunded unless the weather is  a safety issue.

WHERE: Ruataniwha Conservation Area, south of Mount Cook. Staying at Ferintosh Station accommodation

WHEN: Friday 5th November through Sunday the 7th November

    WHO: Any female NZDA member

COST: $75 per person to cover 2 nights of basic hut-style accommodation and radio hire

The ladies who attended the First Annual South Island Ladies Hunt had such an amazing and empowering time they all left saying "when's the next one??".  So we've put together another all-women hunting trip, this time tahr hunting near Mount Cook.

20 spots are open for female NZDA members to assemble on the shores of Lake Pukaki just south of beautiful Mount Cook for a weekend of tahr hunting, food and fun.  Well-trained hunting dogs are allowed to come too with prior notice.

Trip accommodation is the shearers quarters at Ferintosh Station and we will have access to cross private land into the public hunting Ruataniwha Conservation Area.  We will have blocks and maps organised for safe hunting and hopefully take advantage of "low-vember" when the tahr come a bit lower to feed.

    General Itinerary

Friday 5th – Registration opens at 6pm, Safety briefing and block/buddy allocation at 8pm. Venison Sausages will be provided, bring your own sides.

Saturday 6th – Hunting from sunrise, assemble back at lodge in the evening for yarns and BYO dinner.

Sunday 7th  – Those super keen can head out hunting again.  Otherwise late breakfast, enjoy Mount Cook or go fishing in the canals on the way home.

More details will be provided upon registration. Payment will guarantee your spot.

    Goat Shoot at Coronet Peak

    Sat 11th Dec 2021

Join the Annual Coronet Peak Station Goat Shoot, this event is open to both Southern Lakes and Upper Clutha Members.

We will meet 7am at the Chinese Village Arrowtown car park for a safety briefing and car pool to top of Coronet Peak.

We have permission from the Station to shoot goats. If you are not familiar with the station, it extends right from Skippers Canyon to Arrowtown, Macetown, over the Mototapu and the back of Wanaka. However we will look to shoot the area nearest Queenstown as this is a day shoot

Groups will be allocated and each group will cover a ridge and area, Some will end up in Arrowtown where we will arrange for someone to drop you back to Coronet peak to get your vehicle back.

The NZDA Xmas BBQ and party will be held on the Sunday at Sharons place in Lake Hayes. Bring family and partners to meet other club members.

See XMAS Event for further details.

    Christmas Members BBQ event

To co-incide with the goat shoot weekend, we are holding our club Xmas function at  Lake Hayes Estate. (Sharon and flatmate Katie have offered their house and garden again)

Those that have been there,  know there is plenty of room in the garden so bring the kids (bouncy castle planned) and the house is large enough if the weather turns out bad

Nathan will be cooking a whole pig donated by Dave Black on his  BBQ "Frank".

    What to bring:

There will be plenty of meat but if you require salads or vegetarian items to go with the meat, please bring your own.

There are some beers provided but always good to bring more. There should be plenty of seating and hopefully weather warm enough to sit in the garden

Time: 3pm onwards ish..... till 9.30 ish

Everyone welcome - family and partners (great chance to meet other members) .

24 Herries Lane, Lake Hayes Estate.
Please do NOT use Google maps - it is wrong. It is the road off Onslow - see below

RSVP: Please as it helps Nathan to make sure he has enough meat

Members can register on the link - or non members (Upper Clutha) can just send an email  as it will ask too much info.
