Updates for roar 2021

A ballot will not be run this year due to the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on the 2020 Haast roar ballot hunting periods. Party leaders were given the option to rollover their ballots to 2021. Most parties have taken this option leaving few available hunting blocks for 2021.

Any available blocks will be available for booking online from 9:00 am Friday 4 December 2020.

  • Available blocks can only booked by parties that do not hold or are in any way involved with other Haast roar block permits. Parties found to be doubling up will have all permits cancelled in all members' names.
  • A one-off non-refundable fee of $40 will be charged for each block.
  • Only 1 block can be booked per party.
  • Party leaders who apply for a ballot must be intending to hunt the block with their party. Party leaders applying and successfully gaining a ballot on the behalf of others but have no intention of attending will not be tolerated. Party leaders and members found doing this will have all permits cancelled.
  • Party leaders need to supply a photo of their valid New Zealand firearms licence with their confirmation.
  • Party leader is responsible for all party members adhering to permit conditions.
  • Ensure all correspondence for the Haast roar hunting ballot is sent to haasthuntingballot@doc.govt.nz
