THEME OF MEETING
Dick Deaker and Jeff Carter flying into a high pass to prepare deer for transporting with others to a waiting truck to take them to Te Anau.
This month we’re joined by Dick Deaker, one of the true pioneers of New Zealand’s deer recovery industry.
Dick first set foot in Fiordland as a schoolboy in 1960 and went on to become a government culler in the Takitimus and Murchison Mountains. By 1965, with help from Tim Wallis and Doug Jones, he earned his pilot’s licence and began flying a Piper Super Cub. Ferrying up to eight deer carcasses at a time from the remote valleys of Fiordland.
When helicopters arrived on the scene, Dick was among the first to make the leap. Under the guidance of Don Spary, he learned to fly the Hughes 300 for Luggate Game Packers / Alpine Helicopters, launching a career that would span more than fifty years. From early aerial culling through to live capture operations in the Fiordland wapiti blocks, Dick witnessed and helped shape one of the most dramatic eras in New Zealand hunting history.
Come along for an evening of incredible stories from the air and the mountains straight from a man who lived it all.
